How to protect your iPhone from damage

We see the same iPhone damage patterns every week at our Kibler Park workshop. Cracked screens are the most common by far — almost always a 1-second lapse in attention. Water damage is the most expensive — and the most preventable. Battery failure is the most gradual — and the most ignored until it becomes a problem.

These 10 tips come from years of seeing what breaks iPhones in South Africa. Not theoretical advice from tech blogs — what we actually see arrive at our workshop broken, repeatedly.

Why iPhone Protection Matters More in South Africa

iPhone repair costs in South Africa are significantly higher than in the US or UK due to import costs and exchange rate. Here’s what repairs cost when prevention fails:

📱

Screen Replacement

R1,800–R4,500

Depends on model — iPhone 15 Pro Max is most expensive

💧

Water Damage

R1,500–R3,500

Corrosion repair — and sometimes not repairable at all

🔋

Battery Replacement

R800–R1,200

Every 2–3 years of daily use

🔌

Charging Port Repair

R900–R1,400

Worn or liquid-damaged Lightning/USB-C port

📷

Camera Repair

R1,200–R2,500

Cracked camera glass or failed camera module

💡 The math is simple: A quality iPhone case costs R200–R600. A screen protector costs R80–R200. That’s R280–R800 to protect a R20,000+ device against repairs that can cost R1,800–R4,500. Every tip below costs less than a single repair.

10 Essential Ways to Protect Your iPhone

1

Use a Quality Drop-Tested Case

A case is the single most effective iPhone protection investment. The difference between a R60 market case and a R400 OtterBox or Spigen is significant — drop-tested cases have internal shock absorption that cheap cases lack entirely. Silicone cases provide better impact absorption than hard plastic. MagSafe-compatible cases are worth the premium on iPhone 12 and newer.

For South Africa specifically — dust and grit are a genuine concern in Gauteng summers. A case that seals around the camera and charging port prevents micro-abrasion from dust that scratches the phone body over time.

🇿🇦 SA tip: OtterBox Commuter and Spigen Tough Armor are widely available at Takealot and iStore. Budget R350–R500 for a case that will actually protect your iPhone.
2

Apply a Tempered Glass Screen Protector

Even with a case, your iPhone screen is exposed. A tempered glass screen protector absorbs the impact of face-down drops — the glass breaks instead of your iPhone screen. Replacing a R120 screen protector is far better than replacing a R2,500+ iPhone screen. The key is proper installation — any bubble or dust trapped underneath causes the protector to lift and lose effectiveness.

For iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max — the titanium frame makes edge-to-edge screen protectors slightly harder to fit correctly. If you have an older model with aluminium, fitting is easier. Apply in a dust-free environment (bathroom with shower running creates steam that settles dust) or have it fitted professionally.

🇿🇦 SA tip: Ceramic or privacy screen protectors are available at iStore and Digicape. Avoid the extremely cheap R20–R40 protectors from markets — they shatter too easily under meaningful impact.
3

Understand Your iPhone’s Water Resistance Rating

Every iPhone from the iPhone 7 onwards has some level of water resistance. iPhone 15 models are rated IP68 — up to 6 metres depth for 30 minutes. But water resistance is not waterproofing, and it degrades over time as the seals age and the phone suffers minor impacts.

What IP68 actually means in practice: accidental splashes and brief submersion are fine. Prolonged swimming, saltwater, and hot water (showers, hot tubs) are not. The seals around the charging port and speaker grilles are the weakest points. Never dry your iPhone with a hair dryer — heat degrades the adhesive seals faster than water does.

🇿🇦 SA tip: Load-shedding creates darkness that leads to “phone torch near the braai” situations. Hot smoke and grease particles are particularly damaging to speaker grilles and charging ports — keep your iPhone away from the braai.
4

Protect Your Battery Health

iPhone battery health degrades with every charge cycle. The habits that accelerate degradation the most are: charging to 100% and leaving plugged in overnight, exposing the phone to extreme heat while charging, and running the battery to 0% regularly. Apple’s “Optimised Battery Charging” setting was designed to address this — make sure it’s enabled.

  • Enable Optimised Battery Charging: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging
  • Keep charge between 20% and 80% where possible
  • Don’t leave on the dashboard in Johannesburg summer — a parked car reaches 60–70°C
  • Use a genuine or MFi-certified charger — cheap chargers deliver inconsistent voltage that accelerates battery degradation
🇿🇦 SA tip: Johannesburg summer heat is a real iPhone battery killer. Direct sunlight on a parked car dashboard will take your iPhone from 100% to thermal shutdown in minutes. Never leave your phone on a dashboard in summer.
5

Use a Wrist Strap or Grip for High-Risk Situations

Most iPhone drops happen during specific activities: getting in or out of a car, walking on stairs, using one hand while distracted. A PopSocket or phone grip on the back reduces drop risk significantly by giving your fingers a secure anchor point. For high-risk situations like concerts, sports events or hiking — a wrist strap or belt clip removes drop risk almost entirely.

🇿🇦 SA tip: Taxi rides and minibus taxis create specific drop risk — the stop-start motion combined with small spaces. Keep your phone in a pocket or bag, not in hand, during township or city taxi rides.
6

Keep Your iPhone Away from Sand and Grit

Sand and fine grit are more damaging to iPhones than most people realise. Sand particles work their way into speaker grilles, charging ports and the gap between case and screen. Over time they cause micro-scratches on the camera glass, degrade speaker performance, and can cause intermittent charging issues by sitting in the USB-C/Lightning port.

At the beach: use a sealed waterproof pouch rather than a standard case — standard cases let sand in through the charging port opening. The Kruger Park, Drakensberg and any outdoor SA environment presents this risk.

🇿🇦 SA tip: Gauteng’s dry winters with red dust are particularly problematic. If your iPhone has been in dusty conditions — blow compressed air (short bursts only) into the charging port every few months to clear debris before it causes contact issues.
7

Enable Find My iPhone and Use a Strong Passcode

In South Africa, smartphone theft is a significant risk — particularly in Johannesburg. Physical protection matters, but digital protection is equally important. Find My iPhone allows you to locate, lock, and remotely erase your iPhone if stolen. It also activates Activation Lock — making the stolen phone useless to the thief and significantly reducing its resale value, which reduces theft incentive.

  • Enable Find My: Settings → [Your Name] → Find My → Find My iPhone → On
  • Use a 6-digit minimum passcode — not a 4-digit one
  • Enable Face ID or Touch ID for quick access without compromising security
  • Never store banking passwords or PINs in Notes — use a password manager

⚠️ iCloud Lock after theft: If your iPhone is stolen and you lock it via Find My, the thief cannot use it without your Apple ID. However, if a thief forces you to unlock it and log out of iCloud first — the Activation Lock is removed. In a hijacking or robbery situation, your physical safety is the priority — the phone is replaceable.

8

Use Only MFi-Certified Cables and Chargers

Cheap non-certified iPhone cables are one of the most common causes of charging port damage we see. Non-certified cables deliver inconsistent voltage, have loose connector fits that physically damage the Lightning or USB-C port pins over hundreds of insertions, and occasionally deliver voltage spikes that damage the charging IC on the logic board.

Look for the “Made for iPhone” (MFi) certification badge on cables and chargers. Apple’s own cables are excellent but expensive — Anker and Belkin MFi-certified cables are equally good at lower cost. Avoid cables with a very tight or very loose fit in the port — both indicate a non-compliant connector.

🇿🇦 SA tip: The R30–R50 cables sold at traffic lights and informal markets are almost always non-certified. They may charge initially but cause cumulative port damage that leads to intermittent charging within 6–12 months of regular use.
9

Back Up Regularly — Data Protection Is Phone Protection

If your iPhone is damaged beyond repair, stolen or lost — your photos, contacts and app data can be recovered if you’ve backed up. iCloud Backup (Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup) backs up automatically when connected to Wi-Fi and charging. iTunes/Finder backup to your computer gives you a complete local backup.

In South Africa, be aware that iCloud backup uses your data allowance on mobile networks. Set iCloud backup to Wi-Fi only to avoid unexpected data charges. 5GB free iCloud storage fills up quickly — consider upgrading to the 50GB plan at approximately R15/month if you take a lot of photos.

🇿🇦 SA tip: Load-shedding interrupts Wi-Fi charging backup schedules. Check your last backup date occasionally: Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Last Backup.
10

Act Immediately on Any Damage — Small Problems Become Big Ones

A hairline screen crack spreads. A charging port that charges intermittently gets worse. A slightly swollen battery that makes the screen lift slightly is a safety risk. Every iPhone problem that gets ignored becomes a more expensive repair within weeks to months.

The most expensive repairs we do at Fix My Gadget are almost always problems that started small. A cracked corner that was ignored for three months until the entire display failed. A slow charging issue that turned out to be debris packed into the port that, left uncleared, corroded the pins. Act on damage early — the repair is faster and cheaper.

Frequently Asked Questions

For maximum protection: OtterBox Defender (bulky but military-grade drop protection) or Spigen Tough Armor (slimmer with good drop protection). For everyday use with good protection: OtterBox Commuter or Spigen Ultra Hybrid. For minimal profile: Apple Silicone Case or Spigen Liquid Air. Available at iStore, Digicape and Takealot. Budget R300–R500 for a case that offers genuine protection.
Power surges when electricity returns after load-shedding can damage electronics plugged directly into wall sockets. Use a surge-protected extension cord or UPS for all chargers. Don’t leave your iPhone plugged in during load-shedding hours — unplug before the power goes out or use a power bank to charge during the outage instead.
No — water resistance degrades over time. The IP68 seal around the charging port and speaker grilles ages with normal use and minor impacts. An iPhone 15 that was IP68 rated when new may have degraded water resistance after 2–3 years. Apple’s warranty also does not cover liquid damage even on IP68-rated phones. Treat water resistance as protection against accidents, not as a reason to use your phone in water.
