Why Is My Computer So Slow? — Fix It Today
9,296 people searched this last month. Most slow computers have a simple fixable cause. Here’s how to diagnose it yourself — and when to bring it in.
A slow computer in 2026 almost always has an identifiable, fixable cause. The mistake most people make is spending money on RAM upgrades or antivirus software before diagnosing what’s actually wrong. We’ve listed the 8 most common causes — in order of likelihood — so you can find yours in minutes.
🔧 From our workshop: 60% of slow computers we see at Fix My Gadget have a software or storage cause that doesn’t require any hardware repair. Try the free fixes first.
The 8 Real Reasons Your Computer Is Slow
Full or Fragmented Storage
When your SSD or HDD is over 85% full, performance drops sharply. Windows needs free space to create temp files and virtual memory.
✅ Fix yourselfMalware or Virus
Malware and crypto miners run constant background processes that consume CPU and RAM. A slow computer that appeared suddenly is often malware.
✅ Fix yourselfOverheating (Thermal Throttle)
When a CPU reaches dangerous temperatures it reduces its own speed to protect itself. Your computer slows down to stop itself from dying.
🔧 Needs repairToo Many Startup Programs
Every app that launches at startup slows your boot time and consumes RAM in the background. Most people have 20–40 startup items they never chose.
✅ Fix yourselfInsufficient RAM
4GB RAM in 2026 makes a computer unusable for normal multitasking. Windows 11 alone uses 2–3GB at idle. 8GB is the real minimum.
🔧 RAM upgradeOld Hard Drive (HDD)
A mechanical hard drive is 10–20x slower than an SSD. The single biggest speed upgrade available is replacing an HDD with an SSD.
🔧 SSD upgradeOutdated Drivers or Windows
Old graphics and chipset drivers cause performance issues that look like hardware problems. Keeping Windows and drivers updated resolves many slowdowns.
✅ Fix yourselfAgeing Hardware
A 7–10 year old computer running modern software is simply underpowered. Modern browsers, Office and Windows are significantly more demanding than they were 5 years ago.

Restart Your Computer
Not sleep — a full restart. This clears RAM, closes background processes and applies pending Windows updates. Many “slow computer” problems disappear after a proper restart. If you leave your computer on for weeks without restarting, this alone may fix it.
Check Storage Space
Open File Explorer → This PC. Check your C: drive percentage. If it’s over 85% full — delete or move files. Specifically target: Downloads folder, Desktop, Recycle Bin, and Temp files (Win+R → %temp% → delete all). Free up at least 15–20% of total drive capacity.
Run Windows Defender Full Scan
Windows Security → Virus & Threat Protection → Scan Options → Full Scan. Run it and wait. If malware is found and removed — your computer may feel like new. Also run Malwarebytes Free (free download) as a second opinion scanner.
Disable Startup Programs
Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Startup tab. Right-click and disable everything that doesn’t need to launch at startup. Spotify, Teams, OneDrive, Discord, Steam — none of these need to start automatically. Disabling 10+ startup items can cut boot time in half.
Check CPU and RAM Usage
Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Performance tab. If CPU usage sits at 80–100% at idle with nothing open, you have a runaway process, malware, or overheating. Click Processes tab, sort by CPU — identify the culprit. “Windows Update” and “Antivirus Scan” at 80% CPU is normal but temporary.
Update Windows and Drivers
Settings → Windows Update → Check for Updates. Install all available. Then check your GPU driver (GeForce Experience for Nvidia, AMD Software for AMD). Outdated graphics drivers cause significant slowdowns, especially in browsers with hardware acceleration.
Adjust Power Settings
Settings → Power & Sleep → Additional Power Settings → High Performance. Many laptops default to “Balanced” or “Power Saver” which throttles CPU speed to save battery. Switching to High Performance gives full CPU speed at all times.
Check for Overheating
Download HWMonitor (free). Run it while your computer is slow. Check CPU and GPU temperatures. If CPU is above 90°C under normal use — you have a thermal problem. The computer is throttling its speed to protect itself from heat damage. See our laptop overheating guide.
SSD Upgrade (HDD Computers Only)
If your computer has a traditional hard drive (HDD) — replacing it with an SSD is the single biggest performance upgrade available. Boot time drops from 2–3 minutes to 15–20 seconds. Everything feels faster. We do SSD upgrades with data migration from R900 at our Kibler Park workshop.
RAM Upgrade
If you have 4GB RAM and frequently have multiple applications open — upgrading to 8GB or 16GB makes a dramatic difference. Laptop RAM upgrades from R800 at our workshop. Note: some modern laptops have soldered RAM — we check before quoting.
